What are neuromodulators?
Neuromodulator injections, such as Botox, Nuceiva and Dysport, work by weakening facial muscles that cause wrinkles on the forehead, frown lines around the mouth, bunny lines on the nose and crow’s feet wrinkles around the eyes. These injections are commonly used as a non-surgical, non-permanent treatment to refresh the face for patients of all ages.

Botox, Nuceiva, and Dysport are all neuromodulators used in cosmetic treatments to temporarily reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles. Botox, the most well-known brand, uses a purified form of botulinum toxin to relax muscles, smoothing out lines and wrinkles. Nuceiva, a newer option, offers similar benefits with a formulation designed to provide results that may last longer for some patients. Dysport is known for its quick onset of action and is often chosen for treating moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. All three treatments are minimally invasive, require no downtime, and can be used on various areas of the face including the forehead, around the eyes, and the neck.
Are injectable neuromodulators a good option for you?
Injections for wrinkle reduction are not only reserved for those with deep lines. Younger patients showing the first signs of fine lines can benefit from neuromodulator injections as preventative measures, slowing the signs of aging. All candidates will benefit from softened, relaxed lines on the face.
Your plastic surgeon or nurse injector will give you an honest assessment and let you know if you are a good candidate for neuromodulator injections, but in general you should be in good overall health, have realistic expectations and it is recommended that you do not smoke.
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a diagnosed neurological disease, you will not be a candidate.
What to expect for neuromodulator injections recovery?
Recovery is minimal, and you can return to normal activities immediately, but we recommend avoiding strenuous activities for 24 hours and to not lay down for 2 hours after your injections. Icing the area will help decrease swelling or bruising that may occur. Any swelling that does occur should subside over 48 hours. It may take 4-5 days for full results to be visible, and they will last 3-6 months.
